1- A few words from the Executive Secretary
Dear Friends,
I must apologize for the delay: unless to get it at the beginning of October, you are just receiving this Newsletter, and we are now closed to December.
The reason is the following. We first thought that it would have been possible to issue at the same time, the October Newsletter and also all the necessary material to launch the next PEKEA conference (to be organised during the second semester of 2008) that will enable us to enter our next stage. We have still many decisions pending to end the preparation of this meeting, however, we have already important points that we can share with all of you, see item 2 of this Newsletter.
We are also working to organise an international seminar about the interest and the process of construction of “Localised indicators of societal well-being”: it is specifically directed towards our Local Governments who are willing to have a partnership with PEKEA and its “political and ethical approach” of economic activities. Please, do not hesitate to talk to any people involved in a Local Government and to explain this possibility and the main opportunity it will open to them: to mutualise works about how to improve and to check the improvement of the quality of life of a local community.
These are the two main points on which the bureau of PEKEA, and mainly the small team based in Rennes, is currently working; I would like to give this team my special thanks, especially to Danièle, Fanny, Jean-Louis, Michel, Pascale, Robert.

2- The next PEKEA World Conference in 2008
The next PEKEA World Conference in 2008
We will organise a PEKEA world conference – and a General Assembly- during the second semester of 2008. As for the launching of the first stage in Santiago, we will have the same general title:
A Political and Ethical Approach in Economic Activities
In Santiago, the expected output was to give form and dynamics to an international and multi-disciplinary network and elaborate, collectively, step by step, the outline of a “radically new” approach. This has been done and a short synthesis is already available Click here
For the 2008 Conference, the expected output is to take stock of all previous works and to draw from it the substance that may enable us to write the PEKEA terms of reference.
These terms of references are the lines according to which would be carried out any research work that can be considered as contributing to PEKEA project and deserving a PEKEA label.
To be sure this does not mean to wipe out our present variety of methodologies and paradigms. The aim is to make explicit what we have in common to carry out researches that can be said conducted with a “political and ethical” approach.
Thus, to conduct any research, we will have a check list in order to avoid to forget any necessary item and we will publicize widely these terms of reference to try to share them with as many researchers as possible.

True economics never militates against the highest ethical standard, just as all true ethics, to be worth its name, must at the same time, be also good economics… True economics stands for social justice; it promotes the good of all equally, including the weakest, and is indispensable for decent life …

The critical task before a student of Gandhian economics is to define M.K. Gandhi’s understanding of economics, as distinct from the mainstream economic tradition of Adam Smith. While it is true that Gandhi was not a professional economist, his economics is rich in its comprehension of the dynamics of economic processes, and thought-provoking in its provision of creative alternatives.
To Gandhi, economic activities cannot be separated from other activities. Economics is part of the way of life which is related to collective values. Economic activities cannot be abstracted from human life. Gandhi wanted to ensure distributive justice by ensuring that production and distribution are not separated.

The Tenth Anniversary Conference of the Association of Heterodox Economics (AHE) will be held at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, United States From Friday 4th to Sunday 6th July 2008. Dialogues Sciences-Planète - Université citoyennes des savoirs pour une planète vivable en 2030 . Du 13 septembre au 13 décembre , à Paris, la Fondation Sciences Citoyennes (FSC) propose une université des savoirs, en 7 soirées , pour explorer les scénarios d'une planète vivable en 2030.
L'humanité intervient désormais sur son essence, sur son évolution et sur l'ensemble de la biosphère. Ce que sera le monde dépend largement de ce qui se passe aujourd'hui, dans les laboratoires. Et si des acteurs de la société civile prenaient l'initiative de créer leurs propres réflexions autour de la science et de sa place dans notre monde face aux enjeux écologiques planétaires ? The Congress for Planetary Initiatives took place at Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, on the 24 - 26 August 2007. It was intended to serve as an Open ended Global Concourse of New Ideas, Visions, and Initiatives, in All areas of social life. The Purpose of this Inter-Continental gathering, in the first instance, was to foster serious and immediate Dialog , in the hope of maintaining it on a continuing basis thereafter, between all the extant Paradigms/ World-Views/ Interests / Ideologies that have divided the Human World into disparate, and often feuding, Sectarian Groupings .
