I also hope that PEKEA will remain a place of communication and dialogue which will contribute to strengthen and specify our shared vision. During 2007, PEKEA has analysed the conclusions of the DAKAR conference. A publication will be issued in 2008 which will summarize the four years of reflexion of our Association as well as the conclusions of this conference. Progress has also been achieved in the project about « local indicators on social progress », which may lead to an extension of this project. Our vision for the next few years remains unchanged, to gather under the same banner, with a non exclusive, soft and pluralistic approach, individuals and associations who share our opposition to the financial ultra-liberalism, and our radical criticism of the prevalent economic paradigm. Our level of activity in 2008 will be a function of our capacity to mobilise resources. In this respect, allow me to remind you that PEKEA does not benefit from permanent and significant financial support, and that your support can also consist of paying your membership fees, which we have fixed at a very reasonable level. We have decided to postpone to 2009 the conference which we organise with UNITAR in GENEVA, and I wish to tell you today how much your participation to the preparation of this conference during 2008 is a key to its success. From your contributions will come out the priority research projects for PEKEA during the next years. We are also actively looking for a partnership which would enable us to expand the project on local indicators of social progress, start this project in several regions of the South, and strengthen the theoretical basis for the selection of these indicators with the participation of all partners implied in the local social life. Finally, we will start in 2008 a reflexion on the production of an « alternative »world report, describing how the real economy is working as it can be seen from case studies all over the world. Here again, your contributions will be crucial, and we will contact you as the project becomes a reality. All the best for 2008 Yves Franchet Return to the top 2- PEKEA Activities’schedule in 2008 My dear friends, The PEKEA schedule in 2008 is becoming clear. The bureau, the CA and the local team in Rennes have a difficult but stimulating task to launch the next step of PEKEA and they are making progress but cautiously. Following indications given by our President, I try to implement the programme according to the schedule below. Definitely, the on-going project to extend partnerships with Local Governments seems a sound track to follow with the objective to design, through this cooperation, alternative indicators of wealth, namely Localised Societal Indicators of Well-Being. Thus, a conference will be organised at the end of this year 2008 on this theme. The conference organiser is Michel Renault (michel.renault@univ-rennes2.fr). The project to draw a synthesis from our previous conferences is in the making; we hope to get from the work in progress a more elaborate draft for our themes of references, a kind of PEKEA Consensus; this will allow us to complement the one we already have put in the preliminary call (see Click here) for the world conference we will organise with UNITAR and that we had to postpone to 2009. However we can meet altogether in joining the Polanyi Conference that will take place in Montréal from 4th to 7th December 2008. When we were in the ECLAC premises, for the launching conference of PEKEA in Santiago de Chile in 2002, the ECLAC executive secretary at the time, opening our conference and supporting the PEKEA project, José Antonio Ocampo, drew the attention of the audience to the fantastic valuable work from Karl Polanyi. Ms Marguerite Mendell, member of our Board and Chair of Karl Polanyi Institute is in charge of this conference. We will get details about this conference very soon. Before that we will have an Electronic General Assembly in early July 2008 to take any disposition following the meeting of our Board. You will be informed in due course. Sooner we will try to launch the writing of a world report on the wide diffusion of alternative ways of economic activities: everywhere in the world economic activities are performed in a Political and Ethical way, in a PEKEA way. We would like to present a wide array of them, from as many countries as possible and for as many different activities as possible. You are already invited to send a one-page proposal with details of a case you would like to be put in the Report. I am personally involved in this project with Theotonio Dos Santos. Thus you may send me your proposal at my email address marc.humbert@univ-rennes1.fr. That is to say, this year the WSF is absolutely decentralized, instead of one Forum somewhere in the world, as in Porto Alegre (2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005), Mumbai (2004) and Nairobi (2007), or three nearly simultaneous Forums as in Bamako, Caracas and Karachi in 2006.
