We started as informal in 2001 and decided to set up a formal organisation at our first conference in Santiago de Chile in September 2002. It has been done in March 2003 and our website gives information about our orientation and perspectives and all papers we have discussed are available. Step by step, we are trying to build this new knowledge, organising discussions and workshops and conferences. The last two examples of our walk : a) In Spanish we have still time to propose a paper and to interact in a “virtual” meeting, thanks to Juan Carlos Martinez Coll, to be held in Spanish from 5th to 25th May 2005. 2º Encuentro Internacional PEKEA sobre Economía, Política y Ética Inscripciones e informaciones: http://www.eumed.net/eve/pekea/index.htm(Click here) b) PEKEA as a Non Profit Organization has just filled an application for a consultative status to the United Nations – Economic and Social Council. It will be considered for recommendation by the Committee in 2006 (Currently, there are 2613 NGOs in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council). What is the consultative status? It would enable PEKEA to make a contribution to the work programmes and goals of the United Nations by serving as technical experts, advisers and consultants to governments and Secretariat. We would also be invited to attend international conferences called by the U.N., General Assembly special sessions, and other intergovernmental bodies. Thus we have still an exciting work ahead. Let’s go. Marc Humbert. Return to the top 2- “Democracy and Economy”, PEKEA International Conference, Rennes 4–6 Nov 2005 Our next International Conference and General Assembly will take place from 4th to 6th November in Rennes, and will be hosted by University of Rennes 2. You are welcome to participate to this seminar when coming to PEKEA international meeting. Return to the top 3- DPU use of PEKEA collective funding Please don’t forget to pay your membership fee Thanks to your generosity through your membership fees, and in accordance with our Governing Board, we made a first bank transfer to DPU University in the end of March. Mr Tatree Nontasak, Assistant President of International Networking Development in DPU, conveyed thanks from DPU and Thai people to PEKEA collective contribution and explained us the way DPU is using it: “Because it is an educational institution, DPU has chosen to support the rebuilding of a school in Phang Nha Province, one of the areas most severely damaged by the Tsunami. The school, Ban-Nam-Khem school, was extensively damaged and parts of it destroyed. DPU staff and students are collaborating to help rebuild the school and various facilities. More needs to be done, and PEKEA's kind offer of assistance would provide further assistance in restoring essential educational facilities in this area.” This heartening message reinforces us in our will to keep up our commitment until the end of 2005. To pay you membership fee and give further help please follow the below instructions : You May either use a Bank Card on internet (in English : Click here) (en français : Click here) (en castellano : Click here) Or send a cheque in Euros to PEKEA, Maison du Ronceray, 110 rue de la Poterie 35 200 Rennes France, Or send a bank draft to BPO for PEKEA, Rennes, France, Bank Account n° 910 190 32182 (IBAN: FR76 1670 7000 2091 0190 3218 290 / SWIFT: CCBPFRPPREN). Return to the top 4- Focus : Ekta Parishad This new item will be devoted, in every issue, to one of our partner’s actions in order to have a better understanding and knowledge of each other’s activities. Fot this issue we will give information about Ekta Parishad in India. Ekta Parishad has been founded by Rajgopal P.V., a member of PEKEA network. Its aim is to fight for People’s Rights over livelihood resources. A “jeep yatra” has been organized in central Madhya Pradesh from 11th to 17th March, 2005: In the name of the landlessness, and on the basis of non-violent actions, Rajgopal P.V. flagged off and led the yatra to fight against tribal land alienation and for a true land distribution. Please go on Ekta Parishad website for more information: http://www.ektaparishad.org/(Click here) This action addresses the question of the economic and social rights and the role that they have in the functioning of economic activities. During the next PEKEA conference a workshop will be devoted to discussions and analyses of this topic with an international comparison. Return to the top 5- Electronic meeting of the Governing Board According to our constitution the Governing Board of PEKEA is holding a meeting twice a year, one during the international conference and the other after six months. Up to now we have used the electronic meeting as it is possible according to our constitution; we would prefer a flesh to flesh meeting but we have no financial possibility to organise it. Such a meeting is open for two weeks long to facilitate interaction between members. A Minute of this electronic meeting that was organised in April, will be sent to all of our members by the 1st of May 2005. Return to the top 6- Local Government Partnership President Yves Berthelot wrote in a message to the Governing Board : “I believe that it is at the local level that alternative policies can be conceived and tested. It is also at the local level that democracy can go beyond elections”. This assertion is at the root of PEKEA creation, and we will have the launching of a “club of local governments partners of PEKEA” during our next international Conference in November in Rennes. A few cities and other local Governements in France ( Cities of Rennes, Nantes, Paris, Lille. Brittany, Ille de France, Pays de la Loire Regions, Ille et Vilaine Département) are already in the launching process. Anyone able to convince a local government anywhere is welcome to contact us. Alain Yvergniaux on our Governing board is organising the process and we must thank him very much.
