There are also indications for our participation to the discussions even in the case we cannot come and attend the conference in Rennes: see “Methodological indications …”Click here We are expecting a contribution by 108 people from 27 countries, 10 academic disciplines and a dozen of contributions from CSO leading activists. The number of people we may welcome could be less than we will need as we are watching a rapidly growing demand; to secure your place, please register quickly: download a registration form from the website and send it by fax Click here. Check that you are a member of PEKEA NGO (you have already paid you membership fee) or an indirect one (your organisation is a partner of PEKEA and someone from your organisation is a registered member) to benefit from the reduced rate. This is also a condition to be allowed to vote during our general assembly. Return to the top 2 – Share the burden of reconstruction with our friends in Thailand by paying your membership fee Thailand is one among many countries terribly devastated by the tsunami. We had a very fruitful conference there, where our friends from DPU University “Ban-Nam-Khem “and ESCAP welcome PEKEA members so kindly last year, giving us an opportunity to interact between researchers, activists and having contact with so nice people. To help them in the project of re-building a school “Ban-Nam-Khem” in Phang Nha province, we have already made a first instalment in March and we received a very nice letter of thanks from President Varakorn. The decision was to share at least half the membership fees collected for year 2005 and this is going on with the membership fees to be received till the end of this year as it is usual that many members wait the date of our General assembly to pay their membership fee. Please do it as soon a possible : You May either use a Bank Card on internet Click here (in English ) Click here (en français ) Click here (en castellano ) or send a cheque in Euros to PEKEA, Maison du Ronceray, 110 rue de la Poterie 35 200 Rennes France, or send a bank draft to BPO for PEKEA, Rennes, France, Bank Account n° 910 190 32182 (IBAN: FR76 1670 7000 2091 0190 3218 290 / SWIFT: CCBPFRPPREN). Return to the top 3 – Administrative News from our Executive Secretary 1) PEKEA Network is pursuing its extension and we got for example new entrants from India, Chad and Tanzania; we are please to welcome them with a special bow along with a new group in Japan. A local group is also acting more and more in Santiago de Chile. In total we are more than 850 PEKEA backers around the planet. 2) Our office in Rennes is now run by Yannick Lamezec (Mr) (till September, but as he is a member of the NGO, you may meet him during the conference to the organisation of which he will work as a PEKEA active member) and by Isabelle Magueur (Ms) who will take the lead in September. They have both experience in Thailand and Burkina Faso. You may join them everyday at the PEKEA office, by post, phone, fax and e-mail Click here. Pierre Daniel is now working in Chad but he is still active as a member of PEKEA. 3) Money is still scarce and it would be nice whether the proportion of members of the NGO out of the number of members of the Network could rise. Especially it will help to fund the coming to the conference for people from institutions without means (NGO and universities in countries from the South). We still try to find a little money from everywhere; don’t hesitate to make an effort to drain some donations to PEKEA from any foundations in line with our objectives. In item 2 of this Newsletter all bank indications are available for sending funds. 4) We try to work with Local Governments; local civil servants and citizens, elected or not, as “re-location” of thinking about “economic activities” is an important dimension for the building of a new, relevant knowledge. We expect also that some funding could come from this attempt to set up a club of local governments partnering with PEKEA. Up to now we got the support from Local government that are “located” in Rennes : Rennes Métropole, Conseil Général d’Ille et Vilaine and Région Bretagne. They are also sponsoring our conference. We thank all of them very much and we do hope that a few other Local Governments, first from France will join soon. Please don’t hesitate to contact any Local Government close to your place and inform it about PEKEA and the project of this club of Local Governments partnering with PEKEA. 5) Our President Yves Berthelot filled in our application to get a consultative status of NGO to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, ECOSOC and presented it in New York; after an exchange of information with their NGO bureau, our application has been accepted to be examined in January 2006. We do hope that the answer will be positive and that thanks to this status it will be possible to raise funds to organise future research operations under the PEKEA label. Marc Humbert Return to the top 4 – For those who can read Spanish : about the success of PEKEA- EUMED virtual internet conference in May 2005 Our colleague Juan Carlos Martinez Coll (Mr) has organized with Eumed the second PEKEA virtual meeting in Spanish.
