1- Message from Yves Berthelot, President of PEKEA

With the fifth Conference in Dakar next year, PEKEA will conclude its first cycle of activities. The number of adherents to the PEKEA ambition grows steadily, the quality of contributions received improves. People from different backgrounds and different cultures are now able to work together and are pleased to do so. This confirms PEKEA's initial intuition and therefore PEKEA has to go ahead.

In the near future, PEKEA needs more interaction with citizens involved in the economic or political life to grasp the problems they face and the difficulties they encounter due to the recipes imposed by the dominant economic thinking. In the longer term, PEKEA should build on its network and accumulated material to contribute to the creation of an alternative to the present development paradigm.

To achieve such an ambitious objective, PEKEA has to mobilise more financial and intellectual resources through a greater involvement of its supporters.

Yves Berthelot

2- News from a stimulating world conference: Rennes (4- 6 Novembre)

In Rennes about 300 people have participated to the different sessions of this 4th world conference on the theme "Democracy and Economy"

Stimulating papers have been written (they are still on the page of the conference, they will be included in the general database at the end of December, see point 4 below); plenary sessions and parallel workshops as well have been an opportunity to stimulating discussion.

You may still download the papers direcly choising in the pages you may display by clicking here after

Delegates from 16 countries have been able to join; some friends, from 4 countries at least, had to stay home as the French Embassy did not accept to deliver to them a visa.

Panels of discussion have been organised with participants from different cultures and nations and different backgounds, academics from various disciplines and activists. This was very rich and delagates were pleased by the quality and the intensity of the debates.

During the GA, President Yves Berthelot and the PEKEA members approved the idea that the following key concept-words emerged respectively from the second, third and fourth Conferences: Fraternity (2003), Responsibility (2004), Citizenship (2005). They give the main thrust of the debates.

It is now time to prepare the next conference in DAKAR. Quoting President Yves Berthelot, it reads like this. Looking ahead, the 5h conference in Dakar in 2006 will mark the end of a first cycle. Then, will come the time of taking stock of this first step, assessing the method of work and designing a programme for the next four years. It is proposed that the Scientific Board, building upon the analyses accumulated, elaborate the lineaments of new paradigms for development and a programme of work, during a one week closed seminar in fall 2007. The paradigms will be discussed at the 6 th World Conference and the programme of work adopted by the 5th General Assembly.
