Let me also bring you the good news : the UN Committee on NGOs has decided to recommend that PEKEA be granted special consultative status to the UN Economic and Social Council thanks to Ambassador Oswaldo de Rivero who presented our case and the support of friendly countries, among which, France. Let us thank them and let us merit this recognition due to be confirmed by ECOSOC assembly in May. Precisely, with this accreditation and the decision taken last December by three founding members (Région Bretagne, Département d'Ille et Vilaine et Rennes Métropole) to launch the Club of local governments, partners of PEKEA, we are now equipped for bridging global and local concerns in a dialogue involving representatives of these two worlds. This dialogue should help us to think and act at each level taking into account the realities, dreams and constraints, of the other. The Dakar Conference on "individual and society" will indeed be an opportunity to explore the conflicts of interests between the worlds to which we belong and the ways to overcome them. Yves Berthelot Return to the top 2- 3rd virtual PEKEA meeting in Spanish : EUMED May 2006 For the 3rd consecutive year a virtual meeting on the 4 PEKEA blocks of knowledge is organised in Spanish by EUMED, thanks to its director, our colleague Pr. Juan Carlos Martinez Coll of the University of Malaga, Spain. Three conferences have already been held : Rennes 2003 on "societal value", Bangkok 2004 (at ESCAP with DPU) on "our feasible common future"; again in Rennes 2005 on "democracy versus ecocracy"; the next one will take place in Dakar, Senegal, to deal with the theme: "individual and society". It will be prepared with the cooperation of an international African organisation based in Dakar: CODESRIA. The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (= CODESRIA), which has members in all African countries, is trying to pursue its founding goals : "encouraging the critical evaluation of the theoretical basis, as well as the conceptual and methodological frameworks used in the social sciences, promoting multi-disciplinary approaches and integrating gender analysis into the work of African scholars". More information at http://www.codesria.org (Click here) The Conference will be organised at "UCAD" : Cheikh Anta Diop University, Dakar. This university has 11 faculties and numerous research centers (see http://www.ucad.sn/Click here). Our local university counterpart is a world famous research centre : IFAN, Institut fondamental d'Afrique noire,(see http://www.africainformation.net/ifan1.htm Click here) which has been integrated to the University in 1966. Pr Abdou Salam Fall from IFAN has accepted to chair the local organization committee. The nice and well-equipped conference center of UCAD will host our conference from 1 to 3 December 2006. Return to the top 4 - Information about Work in progress Dear Friends, I would like to give you a little information about work in progress. -Our main task is to prepare a sound basis for the Dakar Conference and we will disseminate a call and guidelines for proposal at the beginning of April. -We have to ask again for Network members to join the NGO, membership is a requisite for for individual members to propose a communication, a paper or a note to a Conference and to have it eventually posted in the website. This is also very important to PEKEA in relation with the rest of society for its credibility. Please help us with this task which is a collective one. -We are trying to give more visibility to thematic and local groups, thus we will open an entry for that in our website. To all who are involved in such groups, please help! -The call to other partners of PEKEA within a Club of Local Governments is to be launched widely and we will ask you to act as an intermediary to people you may know in Local Governments in your vicinity. If needed, we may act in coordination with you. - Following our conference in Rennes 2005, two books are in preparation, one in French and one in English. Thank you to all and especially to authors and reviewers. It is a long process and we would like it could be finished before the Dakar Conference. The original draft papers presented during our previous conference (among them the last one, Rennes 2005) are still available in our website and have been included in the database, so that they can be searched with the search engine. Among the other 20%, we count partly with people directly involved in organising economic activities with a different spirit and concretely in a different way that the strict observance of the utilitarian behaviour. An other part is composed of people who are nor researchers nor involved in such organisations but who feel committed to the contents of PEKEA project and who are willing to support it. Among these, some act as an intermediary with their organisation which is a partner of PEKEA: we have reciprocally put a link to each other's website and we give information on our respective works. This has led to build links among thousands of people around the world. However, in our relation with International, National or Local Governmental Organisations we must present a number of members of our NGO sufficiently high. Last year only 147 individuals paid their membership fee, in total less than 250 members have paid at least once their membership fee. The amount is at the appreciation of any member, there is only an indication of suggested amount according to the monthly income. So we have to ask again for Network members to join the NGO. Membership is a requisite for individual members to propose a communication, a paper or a note to a Conference and to have it eventually posted in the website. Membership allows a special rate to register to all our events and to buy the next books to be published. This is also very important to PEKEA in relation with the rest of society for its credibility. Please help us with this task which is a collective one.
